animating artemisia
using motion to bring the baroque painter's work to life
For our final in Motion Graphics, we were challenged to create a piece about a topic that mattered personally. I teamed up with Kitty Kozlowski to create a five-minute video exploring the life, art, and legacy of the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.
As women pursuing creative fields, we connected deeply with Gentileschi’s story. Her work—and the adversity she faced as a woman in a male-dominated art world—still resonates today. Our goal was to spotlight her voice and her impact, while experimenting with motion in a meaningful way.
We leaned into a bold, abstract animation style to contrast with the realism of Gentileschi’s paintings. This allowed us to reinterpret her work in a modern visual language, while making the historical subject matter feel fresh and emotionally engaging.
